The Kerrville Folk Festival

 
I can't think of enough good things to say about the Kerrville Folk Festival. Although I have been studying music in its myriad forms since I was a child, I would have to say that Kerrville has given me more inspiration, more songs and more actual experience playing than any one person, place or institute of higher learning. It is the place where I met friends Brian Cutean, Ky Hote, Steve Gillette, David Amram, . . . the list goes on forever. The festival places great emphasis on the songs themselves and the people who write them. No place have I visited that provided such an atmosphere of inspiration to musicians and writers at any level, from professionals to the guy who just wants her to know how he feels. If you happen to be in Texas around the end of May or beginning of June, be sure to drop by for some pickin' and grinnin' and be sure to bring a song or two.

If you insist on trying to understand Kerrville without actually going there,
the best thing to do is to get a great book by Dyanne Fry Cortez
called Hot Jams & Cold Showers.
